Since his debut in 1991, Gary has played 144 matches for Natal - 57 of them as captain. He was captain of the Springboks in 36 of the 42 tests he played, including the world-equalling run of 17 consecutive wins, in a tally of 29 victories overall. In 1998 Gary was awarded the South African Player of The Year Award, and in 1999 joined Newport in Wales, for the final 2 seasons of his illustrious career.
